What is the “Marshall” sound?

While, the Marshalls of the 60s 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s all sound different, I would like to suggest that there is a certain tonal focus in the “midrange” that of all these amps share.

When we hear a Marshall, we immediately recognize the sound as “The Marshall Sound”!
That said, it might be safe to say that the most iconic Marshall sound would be that of AC/DC or Jimi Hendrix.

While I’m sure that the boys in AC/DC have always had access to every Marshall that was available at the time, I’ve read that what we hear could be hearing the “1959”, the“1987”, the 2203, the 2204, and even the JTM 50 on recordings. but nobody really knows unless they were there!
I love the sound of all of these amps and I hope to be able to get a chance to profile each and every one of them.

That said…… I’d like to introduce you to an interesting, and quirky Marshall Kemper Profile pack that I call the “AME Marshall Kemper pack #1”.
I have profiled three different amplifiers for this pack. I’m kind of proud of the fact that these are all unique and that they haven’t been profiled much before now. and FYI, I use all of these profiles on my live gigs.

The first Marshall in the pack is the “JCM 800 2205”. This is a 50 watt JCM that came out in the late 80’s/early 90’s, and may have been a signature model for George Lynch at some point.
I had a hard time finding any other profiles of this amp out there at all.
In some circles, it is thought of as the most unpopular of the JCM 800 amplifiers. It is known for having a diode based gain stage so it is a higher gain amp that a regular JCM 800 2203 or 2204.

Truthfully I found this amp to be a bit of a one-trick pony. Sort of.  It basically sounds amazing with the gain on full (10). The amp opens right up and and it has a beautiful, tone-full singing lead sound and a thick heavily saturated rhythm sound …..but that’s about it.
That said, I love these profiles!

The 2nd amp in the pack is a new Marshall product that came out about five years ago as part of the “studio series”. It’s called the Marshall SV 20.
It’s a 20W plexi-style amp that has four input jacks and has that classic plexi sound when you jump from one channel to the other.
Also there are a few really great lead profiles from this amp that were captured by using a Keeley modded TS9 Tube Screamer and a Spark boost pedal.

Lastly, the 3rd amp is not really a Marshall amp at all…….whats that you say?
It’s a Fender Princeton 65 reissue + the famous (and really valuable) 1968 Marshall “Supa-fuzz” fuzz pedal. I thought it would be fun to include it in the pack!

Incidentally, these pedals sell for approximately $2000+ on Reverb…… I found this pedal on a recycling table at Staples a couple of years ago!  Woo Hoo!

Profile Naming Conventions:
It’s pretty self explanatory but if you see a TS in the profile name, that stands for Tube Screamer. The tube screamer used when creating these profiles was a Keeley Modified TS9!

g = (G12-65 speakers)
gr = (Greenback speakers)
HB = Humbucker pickups
P90 = P90 pickups
S = Strat
A = prestige boost

My over-sized Mesa 4×12 speaker cabinet is a great match for this amp and that cab was used for many of the profiles, however, I also profiled the amp with a Custom 2×12 Greenback cabinet and a Custom 2×12 G12-65 cabinet. These two cabs provide some cool tonal options for the 2205 which makes this pack super flexible!
